I found this today when reading an interview with the cast of American Pie 2. It was from a UK magazine called Star Magazine (think its a newspaper add on magazine) and was done in October 2001:
* Alyson, are you friends with Sarah Michelle Gellar when you’re shooting Buffy?
Alyson: No, not really. She really keeps to herself. I do have friends on the set - Emma (Caulfield) is one of my best friends, but Sarah's really private.
It's strange because its very different to other interviews that have been done with both of them. I can't find it just now, but in the last interview SMG did with Seventeen magazine she joked about how she almost poisoned AH after picking her up from hospital after surgery with out of date yoghurts. There have been interviews with Alyson as well talking about them getting together during times when they're not filming the show, though they aren't as often now because SMG is so busy all the time. Maybe they weren't talking at the time of the interview lol.

Alyson and Sarah were friends as long as Alyson dressed and styled herself like a wallflower. Then she became hot and had a succesful movie. That was too much for the other person.

Thank you BloodyHell.
My personal opinion is simply that none of us really know any great details about the behind-the-scenes dynamics between the cast members. A snipet here and an interview there hardly constititute a firm basis to draw conclusions. All Aly has said here is that she and Sarah weren't close friends and that Sarah is very private. I don't think that comes as a surprise to anyone. And in all honesty, it's not unusual to not be best friends or even get along with everyone you work with. Some people or rather their personalities simply clash and then add that to any other tensions that may have existed and you can end up with two people who simply don't hang out during their coffee breaks or at the mall on their days off.
But Aly and SMG have shown that they are both great professionals and their remarkable performances over the years are in no way diminished by the apparently distant relationship the two actresses had. And let's remember, they weren't hired to be best friends but to act as if they were on screen.
In any event, considering our rather limited outsider's perspective, I think we should all exercise caution when commenting.
And let's keep it respectful because we don't need this thread to end up like previous "Aly & SMG" topics.

He has also said that in a lot of ways season 7 was viewed by the other writers (and him) as the story of Joss himself.
I think it's ridiculous that someone would assume that if Sarah and Alyson didn't get on, it's about jealousy from Sarah towards Alyson. There are many times in life when people don't get on and it has nothing to do with jealousy. Sometimes people just don't click.

That is a tabloid as well, but don't think they would be brave enough to print something that wasn't said and show it as a direct quote though. Or am I putting too much faith in the papers? lol. This interview was for American Pie and was with the American Pie cast so it could have been her way of avoiding other questions about Sarah. It must be really frustrating trying to promote something and constantly being asked about something or someone who has absolutely nothing to do with that project. in the end I still have never read a word that they hate each other and maybe they did get aong better in the begining or maybe it was the studio asking them to appear together and they were just doing thier jobs.

Hey, Since no one took a jab I will.... ok learn to differenciate Willow and Buffy from Alyson and Sarah. Willow was the wallflower type. ALYSON has been sexy ever since I can remember, back in the 98 or 99 VMAs, Alyson accompanied Sarah and let me say, what Alyson wore was a sexy green get up, I found her sexier than Sarah at the time. Both are great actresses, and I HIGHLY doubt Sarah envies Alyson for AP... dude as LBB said, get over it.
Sarah and Alyson are 2 very different women with a same vocation, but different goals...you...find a hobby.
I apologize in advanced if I seem rude to anyone, or have broken a policy.
P.S. if you all get a chance, watch Sarah's first SNL sarah went to, at the end, Sarah holds a sign that says "I Miss You ALY, "Willow Rules!", I don't think Sarah would do that just because, she and aly were friends, if I may, very good. So don't hate, appreciate!

Wow, for someone who hangs around a SARAH MICHELLE GELLAR posting board, you certainly have a lot against her don't you?
I agree with SMG Fanatico, while Willow was the wallflower type, Alyson certainly wasn't. I remember interviews back in '98 or so, when Sarah used to joke about how Alyson had a sick sense of humour.
Plus, you could look at it from a different perspective, perhaps Alyson began to resent all the attention that Sarah got as the star of BtVS, while Alyson got the reputation as the geek. Maybe that's why Alyson's doing all those photoshoots for those men's magazines to show how sexy she actually is. I remember in the Howard Stern interview back earlier when he commented to Sarah how in BtVS they had hot girls on the show like Buffy and Cordelia. And then, Sarah added "and Willow." But then Howard Stern said, rather unethusiastically, " Yeah." To which Sarah replied, "Hey!" like she was insulted for Aly. So hey, maybe Aly got jealous of Sarah, which may have resulted in a rift between them.
. . . But, Oh wait, sorry I forgot, all blame must fall upon Sarah. (sarcastic voice).
But seriously, we don't know what really happened, unless there's an tell-all exclusive in the future. It kind of pisses me off when you state your opinions as facts.
ETA: I just realized that this post makes me look anti-Alyson. I'm not really. I think she did a wonderful job on BtVS and she was adorable as Willow.

I agree SMG Fanatico. I was thinking the same thing. People tend to mesh reality and fantasy. Buffy and Willow are best friends. So what if Sarah and Alyson aren't.
You don't see the supposed rift between Charisma and Sarah being talked about near as much...because they really weren't friends on camera. It just makes for more "interesting" stories.
Personally, I don't think there is a rift. I just think they drifted apart, no big deal. In the world of Hollywood though, everything is blown up. I guarentee everyone has a close friend that they don't even speak to now. Some people really need to get over it all.

buffy gets buffed
They're more than just ghoul friends: The stars of the WB network's hit TV show escape the set and join the living for a heavenly weekend at Ojai Valley Inn & Spa.
Deep in Southern California's Ojai Valley, the calm of the undulating landscape is slashed by sudden screams. Sarah Michelle Gellar, aka Buffy the Vampire Slayer, is investigating her surroundings, accompanied by her friends and co-stars Alyson Hannigan and Charisma Carpenter. But these are no creepy catacombs, and the young actresses are not stalking the undead. Indeed, the screams are theirs -- and they're alive with delight. They've come straight to this sleepy village (75 miles outside L.A.) from a grueling week's work on the hugely popular high school horror show, now in its third season. If there's once place that can restore their souls after battling bloodsuckers, it's the Ojai Valley Inn & Spa, where a weekend of deserved downtime -- sans monsters of boyfriends -- awaits.
Here in the valley, ringed by the Topa Topa mountains, these actresses have already shed the Hollywood veneer. After checking into their sumptuous penthouse suites, they jump on the beds and bounce from chair to chair. They wander through the hacienda-like setting, spattered with pools, tennis courts, and a championship golf course; their jaws are in a constant state of drop. As they let down their hair (one blonde, one redhead, and one brunette), it becomes clear that despite the flurry of attention that often surrounds them, these young women are at heart all girl. While they're sunbathing poolside in the dry heat, and attendant comes by with a spray bottle and murmurs, "Mist ma'am?" Carpenter turns to her buds and says, "This is equivalent to every man's dreams of being fed grapes and fanned by a harem!"
Though each has a distinct personality, they're unusually close -- something that reveals itself instantly in their sisterly dissing. "Want to see a picture of my boyfriend?" says Carpenter. "You brought pictures? says Hannigan. "I thought of doing that, but I'd have to bring the frame and that'd be cheesy."
Of the three, he 21-year-old Gellar is the youngest (and least attached). Yet she is mother and mastermind to the trio. Even lying around by the pool she takes sentences three at a time, always the first to interrupt a silence and the owner of the last work on the "best" -- whether hotel, restaurant or shot to buy a gecko. The three have a lot in common with their screen personas: the 24-year-old Hannigan (Buffy's best friend, Willow) is the cutup, while Carpenter, 28, is Cordelia, the glamour-puss a-la-prom queen type she plays on the show.
To inaugurate their orgy of feminine buffing and bonding, they unwind with individual massages, a steaming, and a two-hour Journey to Serenity facial. Of the latter, Hannigan says, "Oh my gosh, it was incredible. I fell asleep and started snoring and woke myself up. I felt so stupid, but the facialist said, 'It happens all the time. We take it as a compliment.' Charisma fell asleep and didn't even know she got a scalp massage." By the end of the day, says Hannigan, "we felt like steamed vegetables, we were all so rosy cheeked. It was great."
On Sunday, they rise early to try the spa's specialty treatment, Kuyam. (The name comes from a Chumash Indian word meaning "a place to rest together.") The ritual mud makeover is held in a Moorish-style steam room tiled in a riot of exotic patterns. (More than 60,000 tiles have gone into the creation of this year-old spa complex -- part of a $20 million renovation that has turned a historic 75-year-old inn into a world-class resort attracting such visitors as Jada Pinkett Smith and Michael Bolton.)
Today, Anthony Hopkins happens to be lunching in one of the resort's restaurants. The Buffy contingent, however, would rather lounge in luxurious robes and order room service. There's not much reason to leave. Their 3,500-square-foot suite, accessible only by private elevator, takes up the entire top floor of the spa building and features fireplaces, patios, whirlpools, sauna and meditation lofts. Perched up in their tower, eating off one another's plates, these women are not counting calories. "Life's too short to worry about dieting," says Hannigan, mid-french fry. Moderation with the occasional indulgence is the likelier group credo. Aching to splurge, Gellar pushes her salmon aside and grabs the menu. "Let's see, they have tiramisu, frozen cappuccino pie with Italian meringue, and white chocolate mousse cake. I just want to say, guys, those are not off the spa menu!"
Unlike the frequently bewildered Buffy, Gellar seems to move with the precision of a Stealth bomber. She's been aiming for fame since age 4, when she started doing commercials; in 1994 she won an Emmy as Susan Lucci's devious daughter on All My Children. Now she's following up big-screen splashed in I Know What You Did Last Summer and Scream 2 with juicy roles in next year's Cruel Intentions (a youthful take on the French Classic, Les Liasons Dangereuses) and Vanilla Fog. Even her hair color is in orbit. "In three months I've been brown, red and blond," she says (she's naturally a light brown).
Today, back to Buffy blond, Gellar -- with the focus typical of an ambitious talent -- makes staying centered a priority. After lunch, she heads for a personal yoga session. For the last year or so, she has been spending 10 or 15 minutes a morning in her trailer doing yoga meditation and also has been reading about Buddhism and Greek mythology. She even has a Tao symbol of patience tattooed on her ankle. "It's about life patience," she explains. "As in, if you follow the path you truly believe in, you'll be rewarded in the end."
Carpenter's idea of a reward is the spa's rose-petal massage. It's the ultimate ode to femininity, much appreciated by a self-proclaimed "girly-girl" who was born in Las Vegas and named after a perfume. "When I was growing up, acting never crossed my mind," she says. "I wanted to be a teacher. I was working at a restaurant when I was introduced to a manager. Through him I met a commercial agent."
True to her name, Carpenter packs a lot more charisma than that stuck-up Cordelia. "Now that was the bomb!" she says after the massage. "[The masseuse] could feel I'd had a back injury. She didn't need me to tell her. She was able to teach me about energy and anatomy and breathing -- and the oils smelled amazing."
Through Hannigan's been in from of the camera since childhood (she made her film debut at 13 playing Dan Akroyd's daughter in My Stepmother is an Alien), she hasn't had too many facials. "She's the low-maintenance member of the group," says Carpenter. To make up for lost time, and because her skin often breaks out after wearing heavy makeup for 12 hours a day, she takes in two at Ojai. But behind that sensitive complexion is an inner playground that keeps her constantly amused. "I was an only child of a single parent, so my imagination was my baby-sitter," Hannigan says, admitting to a lifelong obsession with Dr. Seuss. It's her "good sense of quirk" that won her a movie role in the forthcoming East Great Falls High and allows her to find the beauty -- and wit -- in a wallflower like Willow. "I think I'm the character most people can relate to [on Buffy]," she says. "Everybody knows a Willow, if they aren't a Willow themselves," says the naturally auburn-haired actress, whose long-lashed hazel eyes flash green.
As the troop gets ready to leave Sunday night, they're already making plans to come back. "We've been such princesses this weekend," worries Carpenter. "I guess if life was like this all the time, though, we'd get bored." "Bored is not the word I'd use," says Gellar, who, after a weekend of winding down, is finally speaking at normal speeds. But she still has the last word. "I could really get used to this."

Alyson is jealous of Sarah? Then why this article?

Alyson is an ugly geek? Maybe you're thinking like this, millions of other people have another opinion. I remember Alyson being voted FHM's 10th hottest woman in 2001 and this in front of Sarah and she is always in front of Charisma. Maybe not everyone likes a lot of teeth.
By the way who cares what an absolutely ugly person like Howard says? That guy even admits that he likes anorexic women the most.
So it's a compliment for Aly when he says she's damn ugly.

If it's an ''inside source'' or an ''unidentified source'' treat it with a major pinch of salt, like a truckload full. Nobody tells a gossip columnist anything unless they want it splashed all over the papers, and nine times out of ten it's because they have a personal axe to grind.

The FHM poll results have nothing to do with anything. Big whoop. In one UK poll Alyson came ahead of Sarah. All that means is that she did a photoshoot in the mag more recently. That's the way those things tend to work. Nobody here is saying that Sarah coming ahead of Alyson in every other country in every other year in the FHM polls means anything (because these things are pretty much meaningless).

Leigh: I don't care what an ugly person like Howard Stern says. If I was as ugly as him I would have already shot myself.
After Alyson was with Tara Reid and Natasha Lyonne on his show, all guys in his show said that Alyson was the most beautiful, but Howard said that Alyson is very hot but he prefers fake blondes that consist of only bones. Alyson was too fat for him. Can you imagine this? Every person I know that has met Alyson, said she was very thin.
IMO Howard needs a psychiatrist because he's a pervert.
Guys that are far more attractive than him, f.e. Alexis Denisof, Jason Biggs, Seann William Scott, Tom Lenk, ASH, NB... all called her hot in interviews. Who cares what an ugly guy like him said about her.
And it's more of a success for Aly to win over Sarah than for Sarah to win over Aly, because Sarah gets all the promotion and covers.
Maybe Alyson does better in the English polls than the American because English people aren't racists against red heads.

I don't really like to comment on the rift between Aly and Sarah, but I am more of an Aly fan.
I like to think they are friends as it makes Buffy seem more real.
At the end of the day, Alyson is my role-model and I don't like to read bad things about her just as people on this board don;t like to read bad things about Sarah, that's not to say I think Aly is perfect, she's not (very, very almost is though

) just as Sarah's not perfect.
At the end of the day at work, school, home you all get on with certain people better than you do others. Alyson's are Emma, Nick, Tom and Anthony and I'm sure Sarah gets on better with James and Michelle moreso than she does the others.
It's life.
That's just my view, I hope I have not offended anyone or broke policies as I am new to the board.

Just reading some repsonses and I just wonder why is it so important to us that Aly and Sarah get along?
I dont doubt for a minute the friendship these two had at the begining but after 7 years things change. Both of them had and have lives away from the set and during those seven years things changed for these two personally. They fell in love and careers took over.
Like I said before the only two people who know how the relationship is, is Aly and Sarah themselves. I think speculating about jealousy or as it was said in another debate I had partner pressure is unfair on both ladies.
I throw another question out do you think they are friends with other people that have been and gone through the years?

Ok, no one has a right to talk about smg being jealous of aly, and aly being jealous of smg because until one of them actually says that they are, it is a mere assumption that holds no truth to it.
Willow and Buffy were best friends.
Aly and Sarah were not best friends.
Get over it.
They don't have to get along. its not a big deal at all. we should just be thankful that they were so professional and helped bring to life such amazing characters despite personal differences (assuming they had any, for all we know their personalities may have not been meshable and nothing more).

Ok, my rant is over. |
Seconded!

Just reading some repsonses and I just wonder why is it so important to us that Aly and Sarah get along?
Like I said before the only two people who know how the relationship is, is Aly and Sarah themselves. I think speculating about jealousy or as it was said in another debate I had partner pressure is unfair on both ladies.

You're completely right. I for one don't particularly care if they were friends or not during their time on the show (although obviously it would have been quite nice for them if they had been). I seriously take issue with people suggesting that if they didn't get on too well, it was because of jealousy on either side. That's a ridiculous assertion to make when neither woman has directly commented on the issue, and when all suppositions seem to be based on stupid tabloid rumours.

| QUOTE (hellothere @ Jul 9 2003, 01:01 AM) | Wow, for someone who hangs around a SARAH MICHELLE GELLAR posting board, you certainly have a lot against her don't you?
That was before Howard met Alyson in real life. After she was on his show he said that she is hotter than Sarah and has a prettier nose. Alyson is jealous of Sarah? Then why this article? http://www.eonline.com/Gossip/Awful/cauth/...99/990401b.html and that isn't the only one. So it's a compliment for Aly when he says she's damn ugly. |
slave, STOP putting words in my mouth/post. I've never said that Alyson was an ugly geek. I said that she had the reputation as the geek, (because of her character Willow on BtVS). I don't know what happened behind the scenes, but you don't either (unless you take gossip sources as the truth). My assumptions were just a reaction to your (rather scathing) statements previously.
By the way, I think the reason why Aly was voted sexier in 2001 is because she had done that photoshoot where she took of a lot of her clothes, thus revealing how sexy she is.
Anyway, I nominate this thread to be closed.
