Has anyone heard about a convention where James Marsters told a girl to take her shirt off because she asked him to take off his and he wouldn't so he got mad and he told her to take off her shirt. I can't believe he did this couldn't he just ask her to leave.

I think it was at DragonCon? Not sure.. but he didn't get mad at her and ask her to take off her shirt. I believe I read that he jokingly told her to take hers off first, not knowing she'd go through with it.

I'm still surprised no one stopped it.

I dunno.. it could have been a really spontaneous thing. We'll have to ask somebody who was actually there/knows someone who was there though I don't know if this happened but I think he gave her a hug after that?

I read the transcript from his session at this con and he didn't get mad at her at all. She asked him to take his shirt off and he jokingly said to her to take hers off first, not thinking she would do it. But she jumped up on the stage and did. He's spoken about it a couple of times in other cons as well. Incidentally, he backed out and didn't take his shirt off lol. Think she scared him a bit hehehehehe.
Think this is a prime example of how rumours about people being ''divas'' and being ''difficult to work with'' get started.

It would surprise me if James did get mad at a fan I know lots of people from the James boards I visit that were at Dragoncon and none of them described him being upset, just joking with her and not expecting her to follow through.

I've been able to meet him twice and he is just so gracious with his fans that if he did ever get angry at something, he wouldn't show it in front of them IMO.

I actually thought that was funny when I read the con reports when it first came out. That's what I would say if someone asked me to take my shirt off.
And i've talked to people that went there (me and Jenn were supposed to go ) and they said he wasn't mad.

I just had to say that Meg you're really lucky that you've gotten to meet James twice. I think I would faint If I was within 10 feet of him, lol.

Ok....that was pretty funny If I were him I would wait till her shirt was back on the hug her. Andy hallet is cute! i nver noticed that cuz he's always lorne in that mask.

Later, someone yelled out "Take off your shirt!" People always ask this, and James always says no. He said "F--ck no! Who said that?" A girl a few rows behind me waved her arm. James said "Stand up, honey". He sounded pretty pissed off, actually. The girl stood up, and put her arms out, and turned around... you could tell right away that she was an exhibitionist. James said "Come on up here," and she went up on stage, and he said "Are you wearing a bra? Take off your shirt. The audience was going crazy, all 1000+ of them, even before she took her shirt off. James said "you're not done," and I'm not sure what he meant, but the girl took her bra off too, and did the arms out twirl around thing, and then I had to stop taking pictures. She looked pretty young... it was definitely a cringe-worthy moment. James seemed surprised that she actually did it, and told her that he expected her to wuss out, and she didn't, and that she rocked. Then he hugged her. Topless. Yikes!! Other than that, this was an excellent Q&A with a minimum of old Q's and A's.

they have the same basic report on Buffy.nu only they kinda explained that it wasnt meant to be like that and that he only wanted to show her how it felt to be told to take off your shirt ecept it didnt really work cuz she acctually did it.

[Someone from audience yells out, "Take your shirt off". James, immediately responds in an OBVIOUSLY unhappy tone, "F*** NO!". The audience roars in support of James.]

JM: (in a obviously perturbed, upset tone… his expression made it obvious that he was quite upset and was NOT pleased that once again someone had yelled at him to disrobe!) Who said that? Stand on up, honey. Come on up here.

[Shocked roars and laughs from audience anticipating an uncomfortable exchange. As the young woman who had yelled out the demand approached the stage, James says to her, "You got a bra on?" [crowd roars] She nods yes. James, still seeming displeased by her request, says in kind of controlled but sort of daring tone, "Let's see it baby."]

[To the surprise of James and the audience, the woman unbuttons her shirt without hesitation. She unbuttons it and takes her arms out but the shirt is still hanging around her waist where it is tucked into her pants. LOUD screams and cheers of surprise from the audience. She motions like, "there, I've done it" or something, and James says - I think - , "you've unbuttoned it." He then repeats her own demand back to her saying, "Take your shirt off". The woman holds her arms up motioning as if to say it is off. James says, "No it ain't" -- since she still had the shirt on around her waist. To everyone's surprise, rather than taking her shirt the rest of the way off, she takes off her bra. Deafeningly LOUD shocked laughs and cheers from audience. James gives a smiling, shocked look to the audience. He walks over to the woman and they slap hands in a "high five" and then he gives her a quick hug.]

[The woman puts her bra and shirt back on] (Still smiling and laughing) You Rock! I’m still not going to take my shirt off, but you rock.

[James says something I can't make out then high fives her again]
A brave soul. (Shakes head and says) I'm a fan of yours. D**n, braver than me.

The nest day:

James M: I just want to talk real, real quick about yesterday. There was a girl who was real brave yesterday.

[one of the other guys (I think Leary but not positive) jumped in saying, “That’s one way to put it”. Crowd laughed and he added, “The other would be real naked.” ]

JM continued, “I just want to apologize to anyone if I offended them. I was trying to make a point of what it feels like to be asked to take your shirt off on demand, and she didn’t seem to care. I’m impressed by her courage, but I’m not like that and I was kind of expecting her to wuss out and she really didn’t. And I didn’t mean for that to happen.
If there were any kids in the audience, those really don’t exist in real life. [everyone laughs]

I actually was at school when I found this site, and I was just looking at some Buffy sites that gave me a link to there. I don't really remember what site. I'm on too many sites in one day to actually remember them all.

I thought I would add my two cents, since I noticed that my dragoncon report (http://www.lifesashow.com/dragoncon2003) is linked at the top of this thread, and has generated some controversy .
I didn't intend to portray James in a bad light. The incident was certainly surprising, both to us in the audience, and I think, James. I believe it started out as a half-joke, and then went farther than anyone expected. talkenglish2me's transcript (quoted above by littleme) has got it right.
