Batman: The Dark Knight

QUOTE
I'm an independent filmmaker [ writer / producer ]. I had been talking back and forth with one of Sarah Michelle Gellar's reps about a role in a new film I start shooting in May. It was always a long shot, and we did get the run around for quite a while, but eventually, they expressed a morsel of interest. Never did speak to her though. Unfortunately, yesterday we were informed that she wouldn't be able to do it; because there might be a clash with 'Batman'. Seemed like a fight we wouldn't win, so gave up on that one.

For now its a rumor and even Jett, the person who posted, doesnt think it is true. Still, its very interesting, as I remember a rumor that Katie Holmes beat out SMG for the role of Rachel Dawes in Batman Begins. She could be Harley as well or the new Rachel Dawes, but hey, its something fun to talk about.

Wait...the rumour is saying Sarah might be in the next Batman movie? I think it would be strange if Katie doesn't reprise her role. I know nothing about the next Batman movie, though I did like the last one. I think it will be interesting if Sarah does do it. But I wouldn't be too disappointed if she doesn't.

I agree that this is a highly questionable rumor, but the Wikipedia entry for The Dark Knight does reference an article in the Wall Street Journal dated Jan. 26, 2007 that says:

"Holmes had turned down an offer to reprise her role as Rachel Dawes due to scheduling conflicts. The studio is currently seeking a new actress to portray the character."

Will be interesting to see if there's anything to this.

I thought Rachel McAdams had gotten it...hmmmmmm. Love to see Sarah in it either way. I think she woulda been great for the first one. I doubt Katie beat her out, I think Sarah maybe couldnt do it.

The most recent and persistent rumour is that Maggie Gyllenhaal may have got the part.

If it was a new character; great. I wouldn't want her taking over the role previously played by Katie Holmes though.

Personally, i dont think she did. Nothing againts her, but I think Sarah had passed and she was the next choice. Could be wrong, but thats how it looks.

There's no evidence that Sarah was interested in a role in Batman Begins and no evidence that they were interested in her for a role in the film. Gossip sites seem to just list random celebrities who are in an appropriate age group when discussing who was up against who for any given role. These are the same people who mention every now and again that Katie Holmes turned down the role of Buffy when there is no way that happened.

A good example of this type of "rumour/gossip mongering" is the fact that seemingly every single actress in Hollywood under the age of 40-ish has been linked with Wonder Woman at some point over the last six or twelve months, even though it has been categorically stated on numerous occasions that the casting process has not begun and no discussion about the casting of the lead role has taken place. Sarah was frequently linked with the role early on, even though she made it quite clear with her jokey "Wonder Woman is, like, six feet tall!" comment that any thought of her pursing it was a ludicrous idea. We just seem to live in an age when there is an unquenchable thirst for rumour and gossip and it is much easier to keep on supplying this than wait for actual facts.

As Leigh quite rightly says, there is no real evidence to suggest that Sarah was ever considered for the character played by Katie Holmes in 'Batman Begins' and I certainly don't think it ever came down to a choice between the two actresses. Personally, I am not all that convinced we will see Sarah in the next Batman film, but I guess time will tell.

Someone on the IMDB board posted this. I don't know how accurate it is. Maybe someone with the Batman DVD with the commentary track and features can clear this?

QUOTE
the role of "Rachel Dawes" in Batman Begins was actually written for Katie Holmes and Natalie Portman according to the commentary on Batman Begins like it was a blend of both.

Initially Katie Holmes wasnt going to be available to take the part for some reason and the role went to Natalie Portman but she apparently declined the offer. Sarah Michelle Gellar was called in to audition and she read for the part( I think its on the extras on the DVD) she almost got it but Holmes was available and she got the part instead.

The two-disc special edition DVD of 'Batman Begins' includes a 14-minute featurette called 'The Journey Begins' that deals with the creation of the film and the casting of Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne. However, as far as I know, there is nothing about the casting process for Katie Holmes' character or mention of SMG.

I don't own the DVD myself and so cannot be absolutely certain about this, but a friend who has seen the various extras doesn't recall any mention of Sarah. I also took a trawl through various reviews of the DVD and although the extras are often referenced in quite some detail there is no mention of Sarah or Natalie Portman as possible candidates for the role eventually awarded to Katie Holmes.

I can't help but think that if there had been mention of Sarah in this featurette word would have reched the posting board here long before now. The DVD has been available for nearly 18 months. I might be completely wrong, of course.
