Let's spread the Buffy love, everybody.
Tell us why you love Buffy.
I love her simply because she's one awesome, ass kicking chick. Growing up watching this show I really looked up to Buffy. I'm not one to have a role model (I'm all about being yourself and not basing yourself on somebody else and their beliefs), but if I did you bet it would be Buffy. She was strong. She helped other people, even sacrificing her own life multiple times to save those she loved. She was given an immense burden at such a young age, and though it was hard we never saw whine about it and be all "oh, poor me". She wanted a normal life, and said so many times, but she understood and accepted her responsibilities. She was the one everybody always relied on. And she pretty much always came through. She may not have been perfect, but she undoubtedly an extremely good, selfless, careless person. All are qualities that I greatly admire in people.
And I have to say, it would be lots of fun to get to kick vampire and demon butt every night. Lol.
And, ok, to be shallow here for a minute, she's so cute. SMG is definitely one of the most beautiful women I've ever seen. And she did one hell of a job with the part. She could always make you feel Buffy's pain or happiness or whatever emotion she was feeling at the time. She did such an aewsome job.

Wow. great I idea MJ!! Ok, pretty much ditto on everything you said! ok I'm not that lazy. This is such a loaded question. I think it's hard to describe, but I guess I'll have to try. BTVS is the kind of show that gets you so emotionally involvled and attached to the characters. That one character for me was Buffy. She was a counter against the cliche that women are either the victim or the villain. Buffy is one true hero, she has flaws, nobody's perfect, if she was, she'd be boring and 2D. But that's what I love about her, it's those flaws that she can overcome no matter what to save the day. She's strong, sexy - that confidence does it for me she' witty, intelligent, selfless. She puts everyone's needs before her own. I admire her inner strength, just when you think she's at her lowest point, that she's down and out and she may lose, she surprises you. She always does, she picks herself back on her feet and she wins. A: Now that's everything, huh? No weapons... No friends... No hope. Take all that away... and what's left? BUFFY: ME She ALWAYS finds a way. She over comes all odds, she's so small and tiny and seemingly fragile, but no one really know the enormous power she wields. Plus I'm really little person myself, so it makes me go HELL YA! When they underestimate her and she kicks their ass. Not only her supreme strength, her passion, her COMpassion, her loyalty, ability to forgive, the enormous trust in her friends and the faith in the human being, the souled being. Her ability to love despite her job, her duty, her mission, the loneliness. As we've discussed in another thread, love before the mission. She fears becoming too cold, but I don't think she could be. Although she's a slayer, she has the ability to love like no other. I don't know if i've sufficiently covered it. I'm not sure if words could. In short, I love her my favourite character of all time. And I've never been so attached to a show and a character and I thank all of that to Buffy.

Never any good at summing up why I love Buffy the character but here it goes anyway...
She had an inner strength and inner light about her, that no matter what was going on in her life would always shine through. Buffy always wanted to help people, even at personal expenses to herself. She was never perfect but that's what made her being a hero more compelling.
There's more but can't think right now

Because Buffy was many things, but never perfect. It used to be that a hero needed to be a flawless character. But Buffy made us care about her because we knew she struggled, felt pain, made mistakes.

I think Joss "built" Buffy on SMG's personality and let her express herself organically. She is absolutely credible in all the incredible situations. The audience believes her and feels for her. Its very difficult for an actor to play ezoteric situations - drunk, dead, bewitched yet all SMG's reactions are totally natural. It's a very rare quality in a fantasy show.
Let me quote Whedon:
"Early on, we saw that Sarah can go to a deep emotional place - she can be light and cute and all that good stuff, but she can also take you to a very dark place, and the show ended up skewing that way"
Entertainment Weekly, Oct, 1, 1999, p.45

I love Buffy because she loves. She loves with all of her heart and soul and she's willing to sacrifice everything to protect the people she cares about.
She's strong, but vulnerable. She makes me believe that being me is okay, because she's okay with who she is. At the same time though, I think all those who love her aspire to be more like her at the same time. But she isn't perfect, not at all. She makes mistakes, but she always picks herself back up and owns up to them.
But more than anything, it's the way she loves others. That's the most important thing I learned from watching her for 7 years. All you need to be happy in life are the people you call family.
Oh, and I have a girl crush on SMG. That helps.

I love buffy because she is my ideal girlfriend. Buffy is hot, smart, and I think she is perfect. The emotions she goes through explains and revels alot of things a real caring person would go through and her strength is incredible.

I love Buffy, because although she is a supernatural Hero who slays demons, she is, in a very real sense, a human being with faults and failings. She is not an emotional marble bust, and when she loves, it is messy, complicated and very human. I love her sense of loyalty to those she loves. Having said that, I also love that as a woman, she inspired women and girls all over the world to be brave in the face of overwhelming odds, and through the metaphors of the show, taught us that even superwomen cry. Quite frankly, she inspires me.

Buffy i love her cause shes pretty smart when she has to be, shes strong , she loves the people around her and they love her too, she has a vulnerable side to her, shes very beautiful, she is my favorite female charater of all time, she can kick ass , she wears great clothes, she went through alot of stuff and still kept her head up and did the things she needed to do even when things were bad or when she was scared, she died twice and she still kicked ass great. she also wasnt perfect she had her flaws , she also gave up her life for her sister who she loved very much
Plus having SMG playing Buffy was a bonus i loved the way she played Buffy she played every emotion so well and SMG is a very pretty gal.

She's smart, she plans and strategies, and Lovers Walk tells us she tests as very smart. She cares about clothes and looking good, she is nurturing with Dawn, she cares for her friends. In Homecoming she fights for the crown. It's not just about being able to fight well, she has her girly side and a lot of her strength comes from the fact that she is way more than just a tough fighter. In Helpless we see Buffy in action as a normal girl, and she uses brain power to defeat her opponent. I think all of that makes her a fantastic feminist role model, because Joss is not just concerned about making a show with the woman doing everything a man can, being a girl is an important part of Buffy's identity and role as the slayer.
From the moment she arrived in Sunnydale and reaches out to Willow, we see her ability to reach out to outsiders and those in need.
We see how strong she is. Joss and the other writers put her through hell over the years, yet she never stops caring. I watch and feel badly for her as she takes too much on her own shoulders and seems to feel guilty about everything, even when it's so not her fault.
And yes her inner light, what makes her Buffy. The quality that makes her come back at you at the last minute with a smile and a quip.

I first found out about BtVS from a friend who is a newspaper critic and slipped me a copy of Welcome to the Hellmouth. He told me it was great and right up my alley, knowing I loved shows like The Nightstalker and Forever Knight.
And from the very first I was entranced and impatient for the next new epi! (I got the advance tape about 2 weeks before WttH aired on the WB).
The main reason for that was Buffy and SMG's portrayal of her. Buffy was smart, sassy, funny, sexy, loyal and could kick major butt like nobody's business. And I did love it that she was girly and "soft on the inside" (and she remained so even in the later seasons when she hid that part of herself).
The idea that a tv show would explore a hero's journey using a woman instead of a male character was just a great idea. We saw Buffy grow from a teenaged girl to a woman and every step of her evolution seemed real. Sometimes it was hard to watch her make mistakes and I ached for her. She never gave up; she might have stumbled around in the dark for a while but eventually she fought her way back to the light and was a better person for her struggles.
I loved the Buffy I saw in Chosen even more than the Buffy I first glimpsed in WttH. No matter what road she chose on her journey, she always took me with her and made me feel her joy, pain, despair and jubilation.

Xander: The point is, you're Buffy. Buffy, I've gone through some fairly dark times in my life, faced some scary things, among them the kitchen at 'The Fabulous Ladies Night Club.' Let me tell you something, when it's dark and I'm all alone and I'm scared or freaked out or whatever, I always think, 'What would Buffy do?' You're my hero.
JOYCE: Oh, my sweet brave Buffy. What would I do without you?
GILES: It's, uh ... you're ... BUFFY: A miracle? GILES: Yes. But then, I always thought so.
How can you NOT love the Buffster?
Impossible I say.

They were mostly good people, but every one of them had a flaw -- their "tragic flaw" if you will -- that eventually ended up making their lives all come crashing down around them and dragging them down from their high station in society. I can't think of any hero who didn't have any flaw. They were all flawed. And love4ba .... Such wonderful quotes!

Probably the main reason why I love Buffy is because she's the centrepoint of a whole lot of great stories.
Then there's the fact that she's so small and cute and yeah.. I always just found her hot.
Then there's Sarah's acting - I can feel pain and joy and all the things in between right along with her.

Well IMO at least . IMO they only get interesting with their imperfections. The heros always have flaws. I remember hearing about Superman, and how out of many superheroes he was the least interesting because he was very 2D, which I think obviously, and for intense purposes of entertaining us, they've changed that.
